9-12th Grade College-Going Family Curriculum Overview
These workshops are designed for California Families.
College Conversations: Empowering Families to Support Student Aspirations
A series of bilingual (English/Spanish) family workshops designed to meet the needs of parents and families throughout the K-12 college-going experience, including developing aspirations, gaining college knowledge, and navigating college planning.
The following principles guide the curriculum:
- Recognition of Family Expertise: Families are recognized as experts with valuable knowledge, wisdom, and community cultural wealth.
- Empowerment Through Sharing: Families are given opportunities to share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences about the college knowledge discussed during the conversations, fostering mutual learning.
- Cultural Validation and Integration: Conversations recognize and validate cultural norms while introducing and considering educational expectations and opportunities. This approach bridges the gap between home and school, fostering understanding and respect for diverse backgrounds.
- Community Building Through Dialogue: Conversations encourage dialogue and interaction, creating a strong and supportive network of parents and families.
- Inclusion of Parent Feedback: The curriculum includes parent evaluations to ensure continuous improvement and relevance.
These conversations are part of a college-going framework designed to increase College Aspirations, College Knowledge, and College Planning.
- College Aspirations: Students envision themselves in college and believe they can succeed in any post-secondary option.
- College Knowledge: After developing a predisposition toward college, students need the knowledge to realize their aspirations.
- College Planning: With college knowledge in place, students require guidance through college admissions planning, including the admissions and financial aid application processes.
The elementary school workshops focus on College Aspirations, the middle school workshops on both College Aspirations and College Knowledge, and the high school workshops on College Knowledge and College Planning.
